A research paper detailing some of the findings from Clinical Study of the “PeriBeam®” Pericardial Membrane at the Aichi Children’s Health and Medical Center, has been published in “Thoracic Surgery” Vol. 79, No. 10 (Oct.2026), pp. 745–748. “Clinical Experience with Ion-Irradiated ePTFE Artificial Pericardium – Aiming to Improve Safety during Re-sternotomy in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery”: Hiroomi Murayama (Director, Aichi Children’s Health and Medical Center / Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Pediatric Cardiology Center; Obu City, Aichi Prefecture).

The paper reports a pediatric case in which an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) pericardial substitute (PeriBeam) was used for reconstruction during staged cardiac surgery. A five-month-old female infant with a functional single ventricle and pulmonary atresia underwent a bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt (Glenn procedure) after prior pulmonary angioplasty and a systemic-pulmonary shunt. Anticipating future total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC), the pericardial defect was reconstructed with PeriBeam. The material was easily trimmed and secured without restricting cardiac motion, and recovery was uneventful, with no effusion or infection. At re-sternotomy, a clear dissection plane between the sternum and epicardium enabled safe re-entry with minimal adhesiolysis. The ion-irradiated surface of PeriBeam may promote favorable tissue integration while limiting excessive fibrotic adhesion. No abnormal thickening, fluid collection, or device-related complications were observed. Although limited to a single case, PeriBeam showed good handling and favorable reoperative findings, suggesting potential utility in staged pediatric cardiac procedures requiring future re-sternotomy.。
